Workshops and activity schedule

Write-TEL comprises a series of four themed online Elluminate workshops, with activities and individual support in between, designed to lead you up to the final preparation of a your paper for submission while also equipping you to take your writing in TEL further in the future.

Overview of Workshops and Activities with Key Dates:

Workshop 1: Preparing to write for publication (Friday April 1st, 2.00-3.30pm)

After completing this workshop, participants will:

  • be aware of the different potential publishing outlets;
  • recognise what makes something worth publishing;
  • be able to identify an appropriate outlet for their own work.

Pre-workshop 2 activities

To be completed in the following order by the dates given:

  1. Short online Scavenger Hunt quiz leading to possible journals and calls for papers. You can find this here http://www2.napier.ac.uk/UltimateSurvey/Surveys/TakeSurvey.aspx?surveyid=1674. Please complete by Friday 15th April - and there will be a 'prize' for one lucky Write-TEL participant!
  2. Post outline of the proposed focus for your paper on the Proposed Focus discussion board. More information can now be found on the Proposed Focus discussion board, and we ask that you also complete this task by Friday 15th April.
  3. For the week beginning 18th April everyone will be assigned two outlines to comment on and suggest possible outlets for.  This task is to be completed by Tues 3rd May.
  4. First one-to-one session around selecting an outlet, including deciding on a primary outlet and a back up before the next workshop session. Your individual point of one-to-one support for Write-TEL (Nicola, Keith or Julia) will be confirmed by Friday 8th April.

 


Workshop 2: Writing for Your Chosen Outlet (Friday May 6th, 2.00-3.30pm)

After completing this workshop, participants will:

  • be aware of the different types of paper commonly published;
  • be able to approach the process of literature review;
  • appreciate the purpose of, and be able to write, an abstract.

Pre-workshop 3 activities

  1. Start to undertake the background reading, identify the key authors in your area, and key journals. Be prepared to discuss what you have found out in your second one-to-one which will take place before the Workshop 3 on Friday 3rd June.
  2. Drawing upon what was covered in Workshop 2, write a paper plan/outline structure and draft an abstract (at this stage, we know some of you already have an abstract completed). Post these online (in the relevant discussion boards) by Monday 30th May for the Write-TEL team to comment on (and do free to offer your own peer feedback too!).
  3. Second one-to-one session around literature review and paper planning.

 


Workshop 3: Drafting and review (Friday June 3rd, 2.00-3.30pm)

After completing this workshop, participants will:

  • appreciate the typical structure of an academic paper in technology-enhanced learning;
  • be able to produce a paper outline to an appropriate structure;
  • be able to identify appropriate people to review their work.

Pre-workshop 4 activity (dates for completion tbc)

  • Create a detailed paper structure with key bullet points of content for every section. Comment on the structures of two others. Receive feedback on structure;
  • Create first draft of paper;
  • Third one-to-one session around structure and developing first draft.

 


Workshop 4: Preparing for submission (Friday July 1st, 2.00-3.30pm)

 After completing this workshop, participants will:

  • appreciate the practicalities of submitting papers for publication;
  • recognize common errors made in paper submissions;
  • be able to work through have a check list of final points to consider.

 Final course activity (dates for completion tbc)

  • Finalise draft paper ready of submission to appropriate journal or conference;
  • Produce case study for resource bank;
  • Fourth one-to-one session around finalising paper and submission.
